Summer Camp

The Field School of Hvar

Take part in a vibrant international community of families and friends. Rediscover the wonder of our world alongside your children as they explore science, art, and society as never before.

Each day at The Field School Hvar Summer Camp follows a Mediterranean tempo, beginning in the cooler hours of the morning from 8am-12pm, taking a break for a siesta, and reconvening for an afternoon session from 4pm-8pm, flowing into evening social activities. Enrollment is available by the week – Monday through Friday – on a morning, afternoon, or full day basis.

Island as classroom

The Field School of Hvar has a singular focus on connecting young people with the wild wonder of authentic learning. All children are different, so our program offers a range of activities from al fresco painting to rock-climbing to reading symposia. Topics likewise span marine biology and civic leadership, boat-building and folklore, urban design and fluid dynamics. Incorporating local experts and artisans at every step, children are empowered to go as far as their curiosity takes them.

Community

Join a village of parents connected by conviviality, wellness, and curiosity. Coworking, accommodations, and daily arts and wellness programs are all within a walkable radius along the cobbled streets of centuries-old coastal villages.

Age groups and guides

The summer camp is led by a group of experienced educators, fluent in English and well-versed in learner-led pedagogy and practice. They serve to ensure a safe and constructive environment for campers, preparing materials, moderating discussion groups, organising group games, and giving helpful nudges during lab times.

Each age group is supported by a guide with relevant experience to that developmental stage. Field School Hvar aims for a student-teacher ratio that is supportive without being overbearing. For Early Learners (preschool/kindergarten), there is one guide for every five children. For Lower Elementary (ages 7-8) the balance is seven to one. And for the two older groups, Upper Elementary (ages 9-10) and Middle (pre-teen), there are ten children for each guide.

Just as importantly, children will interact daily with a wide array of local artisans and global experts through workshops, site visits, and other programs.

Every day of camp includes

  • Outdoor painting & drawing with a fine artist
  • Reading for pleasure
  • A hands-on project or science experiment
  • A field game or field trip
  • A plant-based dinner

Policies

  • The Field School Summer Camp accrues significant hard costs to create a memorable experience for children in the program. For this reason, they are unfortunately unable to offer refunds. All travellers are encouraged to invest in good insurance to prepare for adverse events.
  • As a small program with a strong emphasis on collaborative problem-solving and physical movement, The Field School Summer Camp regrets that it is not able to serve all special needs children well. Children with relatively mild learning differences such as ADHD and dyslexia are very welcome. If you have questions about whether their program is a fit for your child, please get in touch.
