Wine Tasting

Vujnović Winery

Wine has been cultivated in the eastern part of Hvar, known as Plame, for centuries. It is no coincidence that “Plame” is also the name of Jura Vujnović's exquisite red wine, crafted from the Plavac Mali grape variety.

Sućuraj is famed for two things: its ferry crossing to the mainland and the Vujnović winery. The winery itself is located in a 15th-century house near Fortica, a Venetian fortress built in 1613 at the entrance to Sućuraj port. Here, you can enjoy Juraj Vujnović’s wines, local Dalmatian delicacies, and the town’s best pizza! The house also features a silver coin from 1441 embedded in the wall, a traditional token of good fortune.

Visiting Vujnovic Winery offers a journey through time and taste, exploring centuries-old traditions and savouring the unique flavours of local grape varieties. Whether enjoying a glass or experiencing the historic charm of the 15th-century house, don’t skip this Experience if you find yourself on the eastern side of Hvar.

A rich history

The Vujnović family has a long-standing tradition of winemaking. Their name first appeared on the official list of Sućuraj inhabitants in 1673.

The Vujnović family owns several vineyards, the most notable being the Mrtinovik vineyard. This vineyard faces southwest, offering breathtaking views towards the island of Korčula and the Pelješac peninsula. The vineyard spans 4 hectares and benefits from natural protection against the fierce “bura” wind, thanks to a mountain ridge. The vineyard's soil, composed of visible limestone, contains ancient sea fossils, adding to its unique character.

Planted in 2012, this vineyard is home to local grape varieties such as Plavac Mali, Pošip, and Prč. Of these, Prč holds a special place in Juraj’s heart, with roots tracing back to Sućuraj.

Prč: a must try

The Mrtinovik vineyard stands as a tribute to the wine producers of Sućuraj, who historically focused on the Prč grape. This variety was on the brink of extinction until Juraj and his father heroically rescued it in collaboration with the Wine Institute from Split. Once prevalent throughout the village, the Prč grape is now exclusively produced by the Vujnović family in the area.

Prč is an indigenous white grape from Sućuraj, known for its reputed aphrodisiac properties. During Hvar’s heyday as a wine exporter, this wine was so popular in Vienna that the Austro-Hungarian Empire established a direct ferry connection between Sućuraj and Trieste to satisfy the demand.
