The best time to visit Hvar – When to go and what to expect
Tourism on Hvar is extremely seasonal. The season generally spans from mid May to early October, with the peak arriving explosively in late July and continuing through to mid August.
On Hvar, the heat is hot! In July and August, temperatures (and prices) soar and the island is full of vacationers, particularly families travelling with their children on summer holidays. June and September offer more moderate temperatures along with nice swimming weather and more affordable prices. May and October also experience blissful periods when the sun is shining, but be prepared for some rainy days and potentially a few storms.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Peak season
For families travelling to Hvar with children, often the only possible time is during the kids’ holidays from mid July through the end of August. This peak summer period is marked by high temperatures, a vibrant atmosphere, and crowded attractions. A word to the wise; if you’re planning to visit during peak season – book ahead! Not just your accommodation, but vehicle rentals and any desired excursions such as boat tours.
If you are into nightlife, the best time to be on Hvar is unquestionably high summer: late June through the end of August. Outside of those months, the clubs are quieter or closed completely.
Shoulder season
Our personal favourite time of year is during the shoulder season: May and the first half of June, all of September, and the first half of October. During these periods, there are fewer crowds, no queues, and more affordable prices. The weather in these months is spectacular: sunny, warm, and breezy enough to make outdoor activities like hiking and biking terrifically fun. Be sure to check out our guide to sport and outdoor activities on Hvar, a part of Croatia’s offering so often overlooked.
The sea is better in the fall than the spring, because in the fall it’s still warm from the summer. Weather also tends to be more reliable in the fall. The spring is known for getting a few rainy days and strong winds.
Prices are considerably lower in the shoulder season than in the peak, and the locals somewhat less-frenzied.
Note that popular spots, such as Hvar Town and Stari Grad, won't be entirely uncrowded. Late June and early September are nearly as busy as July and August (especially on weekends), but the crowds subside the farther you get into shoulder season. By the first week of October, some restaurants are already closing down for the winter.
Off season
For digital nomads and other long-term travellers, the winter is worth exploring, but with a bit of caution. Apartments and villas on Hvar are usually built to serve guests in warm weather. They can be quite chilly in the winter months and sometimes a bit leaky. With that said, if you can find a place that is well insulated for a good price, Hvar is truly a paradise in the wintertime for those who love the outdoors and quiet activities like painting and writing.
From late November through December the island sees a lot of rain, although nothing like the U.K. or the Low Countries. Other months are cool and sunny – ideal for long days outside. Most restaurants are closed, so the island is very quiet indeed, but there is a small population of expats here (including us!) who get together regularly.
