INSIDE

Accommodation at Casa M is spread over a two-storey main house with two independent guest suites accessed from a small internal courtyard.

Built in 1888 as an agricultural home for previous generations of shepherds, Casa M is now a luxurious 21st-century home that welcomes guests with a warm embrace. The property's original architectural elements remain in pride of place, providing an atmospheric canvas onto which contemporary furniture, fittings, and lighting have been discreetly superimposed. Exposed pale stone walls run throughout, flowing organically into similarly soft dove-grey tile floors, and whitewashed wood-beamed ceilings. The overall effect is one of harmony, airiness and tranquillity.

The main entrance leads into the heart of the home, an impressive open-plan communal area that sets the blueprint for the rest of the property. To the left side of this generously proportioned, lofty-ceilinged space is a sitting area with a pair of pastel blue sofas, divided by a bespoke thick-cut wood coffee table, and overlooked by an impressive white brick fireplace. To the right, a bright, well-equipped kitchen with a convivial central island that doubles as the indoor dining area, and French doors that stream in the light.

Back in the living area, another set of French doors provide access to the rear internal courtyard, complete with an olive tree and al fresco lounge seating. Two of the casa’s bedrooms are accessed through independent entrances from this little courtyard. Both are doubles with king-size beds that can be separated into twins, and with ensuite bathrooms.

Accommodation at Casa M is completed by the upper floor of the main house, which hosts the remaining two double bedrooms, each with a king size bed and its own en-suite shower room. This upper floor is accessed via a flight of external stone steps near the main entrance to the property.

OUTSIDE

With its extensive wraparound stone-carpeted terrace, Casa M’s al fresco areas are wonderfully secluded and tranquil, and offer guests plenty of options for lounging, dining, and enjoying convivial moments together.

Extending along the rear façade of the main house is a comfortably furnished sitting area where guests spend many an hour chatting, sipping on a coffee, or relaxing with a book. Next to it, and conveniently served by a wood-burning barbecue, a most convivial shaded dining area – all in all the perfect spot for sunset aperitif and long dinners under the Dalmatian stars.

Without doubt, the focal point of your al fresco life at Casa M will be the uniquely splendid partially-enclosed, heatable pool, which was built within the remains of an older agricultural cottage. Sandwiched between the pool terrace and the dining terrace is the hot tub, numerous cushioned bean-bag style loungers, and an outdoor shower. Spending lazy evenings at Casa M is all too easy to get used to.

The Area

Casa M is situated in Zastražišće, a small village in Hvar’s rural eastern half, home to agriculture for centuries. For those who like to get off the beaten path, the village boasts some of the most stunning beaches on the island, and a glimpse at a forgotten way of life.

Zastražišće is a small village situated in the rural eastern part of Hvar Island, and remains a hidden gem cherished by those seeking a retreat from the bustling tourist spots. The village, enveloped by rolling fields of lavender and ancient olive groves, epitomises rural Mediterranean charm. Despite its diminuitive size, Zastražišće is home to essential amenities including a village minimart and several beach restaurants located in its many coves. It is approximately a 20-minute drive from the main harbour town of Jelsa, where you can choose from a plethora of dining options, explore farmer’s markets, and enjoy a different gelato bar each evening.Accessible by car from both Stari Grad and Sućuraj, Zastražišće promises a scenic drive through rugged landscapes, though the journey from Sućuraj includes narrow roads that demand careful navigation. Plans for a modern highway in the future may alter this rustic charm, making current road conditions a unique part of the experience. For maritime enthusiasts, arriving by boat offers a lovely alternative. Pokrivenik Cove and Vela Stiniva provide serene anchorages and picturesque surroundings, framed by limestone cliffs and quaint seaside taverns.

Zastražišće is a haven for nature lovers and epicures alike. Its landscape, rich with olive groves, is home to Croatia’s oldest olive tree, dating back 2,500 years, reflecting the region’s deep-rooted agricultural traditions. Visitors can indulge in tastings at Seca in the neighbouring village of Gdinj, a modern olive oil tasting room, or explore botanical delights at Grgo Lučić’s lavender farm, renowned for its pure essential oils. The village’s coastal splendor extends to its numerous pristine beaches, ranging from secluded coves accessible only by boat to scenic spots like Medvidina and Beach Zastražišće. Each beach allows its visitors to unwind in nature’s untamed, untouched beauty – making Zastražišće a haven for sun-seekers and adventurers seeking respite.

Guest reviews for Casa M

“The villa is a spacious and clean beautifully renovated old stone house. The bedrooms have very comfortable beds and great ac that keeps the rooms cool, ( it was very hot when we visited +35 degrees) Bathrooms were luxury. Kitchen and living area very spacious with plenty of space to relax, Kitchen well equipped. the outside area has plenty of sun beds and a slightly enclosed pool area, all very clean. there were a few wasps when we arrived but after we covered the hot tub they all disappeared and we saw no more. You would need a car to stay here really with some absolutely stunning very local beaches, the one we went to had two restaurants serving food, the water is crystal clear, beautiful to swim out quite far in enclosed bay. We also had dinner in a local restaurant at Humac, a deserted village turned into an outdoor restaurant with incredible views, food was really delicious!”

Lee B, UK, July 2023

“We had such a special time at this gorgeous house. Our hosts were so helpful and kind and did everything possible to ensure our stay was lovely. The house is newly renovated, beautifully designed and extremely clean and comfortable with many thoughtful touches. It's also a short walk to a mini grocery shop so we had everything we needed. There is a lavender farm, a lovely beach and a farm restaurant close by where we had a delightful dinner at sunset, though we also loved just staying at the house, enjoying the pool and the lounge chairs. It was such a pleasure to stay here and we very much hope to come back one day.”

Julia G, Switzerland, July 2023

“Lovely few nights at this beautiful property. Away from the bigger towns, which made it lovely and peaceful. Just what we needed.”

Bradley L, UK, October 2022

“In two words, absolutely magical. This original home has been lovingly renovated in impeccable taste. It is sparking clean and gorgeous; the pictures are perfectly accurate. To sleep in an original stone home surrounded by nature, to have coffee on the gorgeous patio, and to explore the area with wonderful food and activity recommendations, all was a dream. Best of all, the communication was efficient and thorough, and some incredible recommendations were provided that I would never have discovered, including a dinner at a nearby home restaurant that helped me feel transported back in time. I do feel you do need a car for this home. Jelsa is 25 minutes away, Hvar town 45-60 minutes by car. This is for families or couples who want to get away from it all and have a meditative experience with plenty of off-the-beaten-path options. Access by taking car ferry from Drvenik to Sucaraj and enjoy!”

Kea K, USA, September 2022

“Stunning! We had a wonderful stay in this location! The host was most helpful and friendly. The house is very clean and so beautiful, with great amenities! It’s definitely well worth a visit! Would recommend to anyone!”

James H, UK, September 2022

“We spent a fantastic week in this house on Hvar. It is situated in a very quiet village in the middle of the island and allows you to really take a break from the crowds. The nearest beach is 3 km away and within 10 km there are some fantastic beach spots in quiet and peaceful coves. The whole house is wonderful, made with great taste and attention to detail. In the lower part of the house there is a large living room with a kitchen equipped with everything you need and at the top two very elegant bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. All rooms are air-conditioned. But the most wonderful thing is in front of the house, i.e. a terrace with a roofed place to eat, a place for relaxation and sunbathing, a jacuzzi and a swimming pool that looks even better than in the photos with the possibility of heating the water. We will definitely come back !!!”

Marek F, Sweden, September 2022

“I've not seen a house that got renoveated with so much love to details. The first time you enter the house you have an immediate holiday feeling and you can enjoy it from the very first second. The outdoor area with a pool (very unique, placed in an old house), jacuzzi and BBQ is absolutely awesome and we've spent most of our time their. The house is in a very small village where you can enjoy absolute calmness. We highly recommend to have a car to get to nearby beaches, restaurants other villages/towns. There is no restaurant in the near vicinity that can be reached by foot. All in all our stay was more than perfect and we highly recommend this beautiful and amzing house.”

Gregor L, Austria, August 2022

“Real gem of a house! Beautifully restored old stone house in a peaceful location. The stonewalled swimming pool is such a dreamlike feature you just don’t want to leave the place. We had three kids and a dog and we genuinely recommend this place for an unforgettable family holiday!”
