INSIDE

Accommodation at Villa Gallus is spread over two levels, connected by a spiral staircase that winds its way up to the panoramic rooftop terrace.

The main entrance doors lead into a voluminous open-concept living and dining area from which the rest of the accommodation flows. The space blends wood-beamed ceilings, stone-tile walls and original handmade floor tiles imported from Ohio in the 1970s. At the centre is a working fireplace and a big comfy sofa faces the 32” smart TV. Large paintings and artwork adorn the walls, and quality wooden cabinetry adds warmth. This space is the stylistic blueprint for the rest of the property.

An archway by the indoor dining table flows into the well-equipped country kitchen, which has everything you need to prepare delicious meals during your stay. Mexican tiles and chandeliers add a touch of rustic flair. A French door brings in the light and allows access to the al fresco dining terrace, shaded by a mature palm and enveloped by verdant greenery.

The sleeping accommodation of Villa Gallus is accessed from the living area, where bedrooms flow from either side of the fireplace – to the right, an en-suite double room with French doors opening onto the upper front terrace – and to the left, a double room and twin room that share the ground floor bathroom.

A spiral staircase leads from the living room up to the master bedroom, a spacious king with wood-beamed ceilings, a traditional fireplace, and a sea-view balcony – the perfect spot for morning coffee and gazing out at the sea views. This principal bedroom features an en-suite bathroom with a large step-in shower, beyond which another set of French doors takes you through to yet another wonderfully shady terrace.

Continue up the spiral staircase for one more flight, and you will arrive at the panoramic rooftop terrace, equipped with a four-poster double-size sun lounger, secluded by white curtains that flutter gently in the cooling sea breeze.

OUTSIDE

Villa Gallus’ lush gardens and numerous balconies and terraces are certainly one of the property's many highlights. Life is meant to be lived outside here, and all pursuits are catered for.

Wrapping around the entire perimeter of the house, the pool, and all the way down to the entrance gate is a red-brick terrace. Close to the main entrance doors is a casual al fresco sitting and dining area. One corner of the pool is flanked by the sun deck terrace, whose white stone flooring contrasts against the surrounding greenery of the mature hedges, aromatic shrubs, and shady trees. To one side of the front garden is a gazebo, while at the centre is the 10m-long pool itself, a refreshing magnet for children and adults alike.

At the back of the house, meanwhile, is the gorgeous shaded al fresco dining area, accessed from the kitchen. This verdant back garden is a heavenly place for meals together, with bougainvillea offering shade and perfuming the air.

Lastly, though for many guests perhaps the most important feature of Gallus, is its easy-peasy beach access. Simply cross the quiet road in front of the house, stroll down a path between the first-row houses, and you will have your toes in the Adriatic in less than a minute. The beach right here consists of smooth rocky slabs, but this locality is dotted with plenty of lovely sun-dappled pebble beaches too. Walk south along the coastal road for 5 minutes to reach Vitarnja’s main beach, served by an excellent beach bar. Or in the other direction, a 15-minute stroll past more gorgeous pebble beaches will bring you to a stunning sandy beach (one of Hvar’s rare non-pebble bays).

The Area

Villa Gallus is second-row-to-the-sea in Vitarnja, a sought-after coastal stretch a kilometre north of utterly charming Jelsa Town. Enjoy your peaceful private oasis while Jelsa's harbourfront restaurants and vibrant bars are within an easy breezy 15-minute stroll.

Jelsa, situated on Hvar’s northern coast, offers a serene summer retreat with a blend of modern conveniences and Dalmatian charm. It's an ideal destination for families seeking a laidback atmosphere amidst stunning natural beauty. The town features a vibrant waterfront adorned with bars, art galleries, and a delightful open-air cinema. Visitors can choose from a plethora of dining options, explore farmer’s markets, and enjoy a different gelato bar each evening. Surrounding Jelsa are exceptional beaches, including some rare sandy coves, perfect for little ones. You can reach Jelsa in a few different ways. If you're travelling from Split, the primary gateway to the island of Hvar, you have several options. You can opt for public catamarans (pedestrian-only) or ferries (pedestrians and vehicles), which depart from Split. One catamaran each day docks directly in Jelsa, whereas several a day arrive in Hvar Town. Ferries only dock into Stari Grad Port. From either port, Jelsa is a short drive away, approximately 15 minutes from Stari Grad and about 30 minutes from Hvar Town. Alternatively, there are private transfer services available, which provide a more direct route and are particularly convenient for those arriving late or with specific scheduling needs.

Jelsa boasts a rich cultural heritage intertwined with its picturesque setting. Historical sites like the Church of the Assumption of St. Mary and the Chapel of St. John offer glimpses into the town’s medieval past. Art enthusiasts can explore local galleries and museums, such as the Jelsa Municipal Museum, showcasing Dalmatian life and history through exhibits and artworks. The town’s vibrant social hub is the main square, 'pjaca', a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike. It’s a place to unwind, enjoy coffee or ice cream, and soak in Jelsa’s relaxed ambiance. Recent infrastructure developments, including road expansions and waterfront enhancements, have revitalised Jelsa, making it a welcoming destination for travellers seeking both tranquillity and modern convenience.

Guest reviews for Villa Gallus

“Can't fault this place. Our week long stay was incredible. The house had everything you could ever need plus more! Walkable from Jelsa but bikes were also which was wonderful and really enhanced our stay. All the rooms are clean and comfortable. The outdoor spaces and pool were so relaxing. The house was cool and airy. Special thanks to our hosts who made our stay so comfortable.”

Aisling L, Australia, October 2024

“Great location - easy access to port, beach and has a pool!”

Tammy S, USA, August 2024

“Beautiful place with multiple outdoor areas and gorgeous views from the balcony and rooftop patio. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating! The location is perfect, right across a small street from the water.”

Natasha C, USA, July 2024

“Villa Gallus is a super place to stay and Jelsa is a beautiful location. The house is lovely and the amenities are fantastic. Our hosts were friendly, helpful, thoughtful and always available for any help, recommendations and suggestions for the local area. I cannot recommend Villa Gallus or our hosts enough. It has been a super trip. Thank you!”

Sarah L, UK, July 2024

“The host was super-responsive. He would reply to messages within moments. We drove all over the island, and I feel that this location was one of the best on the island. It was across the street from a nice place to swim, it was minutes to a large market, but was secluded and quiet. We were 5 minutes drive to 2 nice towns. Very pleased with our selection. The house was perfect for 2 families each with 2 kids. We used the pool every day!”

Robert S, USA, July 2023

“Great house with a good layout and well equipped, one minute from lovely swim spots with the clearest sea and five mins from beautiful little bay with bar. A short walk by the sea into Jelsa which has great eating places and a good vibe. Fab holiday.”

Laura L, UK, August 2022

“What a wonderful stay in Jelsa! The villa is well appointed and comfortable, with all expected amenities including a lap pool, laundry, dishwasher and outdoor fireplace/grill with beautiful views of the Adriatic (but a spiral staircase up to the master bedroom if mobility is an issue). Should note that master is on the second floor and other bedrooms are on the main floor for travellers with small children. Not an issue for us as we have teens and appreciated the second floor to ourselves. The lap pool suited us nicely for floating around and cooling off. Swimming in the beautiful waters of the Adriatic was a daily activity as the sea was just a few metres from the villa. Just a short walk down the street in either direction for perfect swimming spots. It is a short and very pleasant 15min walk to town along the sea to shops and restaurants. Great location and very comfortable stay. Our host was attentive and helpful with any questions. Highly recommend and would love to return!”
